About Course
This course outlines legal issues in Canadian sport and recreation management. Topics cover a range of key areas that students in Sport and Recreation programs must understand as they enter the field. These include:
- Risk analysis
- Insurance
- Legal liability
- Issues in tourism and casual recreation
- Professional and amateur sport participation
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
- Describe why and how people take risks in recreation situations
- Explain the legal and regulatory framework for the leisure and tourism industry in Canada
- Define and explain various principles of law and risk management terms and concepts
- Apply the principles and variables of laws and risk management to a sport, leisure, and/or recreation environment
- Discuss the best approaches to communication in a risk management recreation environment
- Make judgments regarding the appropriateness of actions and decisions taken, and demonstrate an appreciation of good legal practice in specific recreation businesses
- Discuss best practices in human resources management in risky recreation businesses
- Express how recreation providers can consider equipment acquisitions and usage to best protect the consumers
- Explain how a recreation provider determines risk potential
- State and explain risk management in adventure and high-risk tourism
- List and explain the responsibilities of various levels of government in recreation risk management
- Define responsibilities of recreation providers towards spectators
- Identify sports violence issues
